…an explanation for householders
A programmable room thermostat is both a programmer and a room thermostat. A programmer allows you to set ‘On’ and ‘Off’ time periods to suit your own lifestyle. A room thermostat works by sensing the air temperature, switching on the heating when the air temperature falls below the thermostat setting, and switching it off once this set temperature has been reached.
So, a programmable room thermostat lets you choose what times you want the heating to be on, and what temperature it should reach while it is on. It will allow you to select different temperatures in your home at different times of the day (and days of the week) to meet your particular needs. Turning a programmable room thermostat to a higher setting will not make the room heat up any faster. How quickly the room heats up depends on the design of the heating system, for example, the size of the boiler and radiators.
Neither does the setting affect how quickly the room cools down. Turning a programmable room thermostat to a lower setting will result in the room being controlled at a lower temperature, and saves energy. The way to set and use your programmable room thermostat is to find the lowest temperature settings that you are comfortable with at the different times you have chosen, and then leave it alone to do its job. The best way to do this is to set low temperatures first, say 18°C, and then turn them up by one degree each day until you are comfortable with the temperatures. You won’t have to adjust the thermostat further. Any adjustments above these settings will waste energy and cost you more money. If your heating system is a boiler with radiators, there will usually be only one programmable room thermostat to control the whole house. But you can have different temperatures in individual rooms by installing thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on individual radiators. If you don’t have TRVs, you should choose a temperature that is reasonable for the whole house. If you do have TRVs, you can choose a slightly higher setting to make sure that even the coldest room is comfortable, then prevent any overheating in other rooms by adjusting the TRVs.
The time on the programmer must be correct. Some types have to be adjusted in spring and autumn at the changes between Greenwich Mean Time and British Summer Time. You may be able to temporarily adjust the heating program, for example, ‘Override’, ‘Advance’ or ‘Boost’. These are explained in the manufacturer’s instructions. Programmable room thermostats need a free flow of air to sense the temperature, so they must not be covered by curtains or blocked by furniture. Nearby electric fires, televisions, wall or table lamps may prevent the thermostat from working properly
The THR872CUK is an easy-to-use thermostat designed to maintain a comfortable environment when you are at home and reduce energy costs when you are away.
Features
Your new thermostat is pre-programmed and ready to go. Just check the steps below and change settings if needed:
Press the DAY button to set the date and time. Use the + or – buttons to set the correct day, then press the OK button. Follow the same procedure to set month, year and time. On completion, the screen will display “Changes saved.”
Date and time should not need to be changed if set properly during o be changed if set properly during SET THE DAY
Note: To adjust only the time, press the + or – button. It is not necessary to press the DAY button.
The thermostat is pre-set to control only your heating system. If installed and set up correctly, it can also be used to control your cooling system.
To switch between heating and cooling, press and hold the p and q buttons until the screen changes.
NOTE: The thermostat will not switch to cooling control unless you enable this feature (see pages 30-31).
NOTE: Program schedules for heating and cooling must be set separately (see page 13)
Press the mode buttons to select how the thermostat operates:
NOTE: You can press any of these buttons — Auto, Manual or Off — to cancel any programming task and exit without saving changes.
This thermostat is pre-set to maintain a comfortable temperature when you are at home and energy-saving levels when you are away or asleep. The default program schedules are shown below. To change them, see pages 13-18.

To customize the program schedules, first make sure the system you want to program (heating or cooling) is selected (see page 10). Heating and cooling schedules must be programmed separately.
To add or remove program time periods
You can eliminate any unwanted time periods (2 through 6) if you require fewer than six per day.
Temporary schedule overrides
When idle, the thermostat displays the current room temperature. You can press the i button at any time to see the “target” temperature the thermostat is trying to maintain.
Press the p or q buttons to change the temperature temporarily. In Auto mode, the thermostat will maintain the temperature you set until the next program time period begins. It will then revert to the level programmed for that time period. To maintain a constant temperature for longer periods of time, switch to Manual mode (see page 11).
NOTE: See also temporary program overrides for holidays, parties or days when you stay home from work (see pages 16-18)
Temporary schedule overrides — Day Off
In Day Off mode, the system runs the Sunday program schedule on days when you stay home. The Sunday schedule should maintain a comfortable temperature all day long (see page 12).
NOTE: This feature works only when the thermostat is in Auto mode (see page 11).
Temporary schedule overrides — Party
The Party feature temporarily overrides the program schedule to maintain a comfortable temperature while you entertain guests. You can also use it to set an energy-saving temperature level if you will be away from home for several hours.
NOTE: This feature works only when the thermostat is in Auto or Manual mode (see page 11)
Temporary schedule overrides — Holiday
The Holiday feature maintains a constant energy-saving temperature while you are away for an extended time (up to 99 days).
NOTE: This feature works only when the thermostat is in Auto or Manual mode (see page 11) Advanced features
Installation procedure
NOTE: If you are not experienced in equipment installation, we recommend that these 22-23, then replace relay box cover. procedures be done by a professional installer.
DISCONNECT ELECTRIC POWER BEFORE INSTALLATION: Can cause electrical shock or equipment damage.
The relay box is wired directly to your heating or cooling equipment. The thermostat communicates with the relay box using a wireless RF signal to control the system. Do not install near metal objects or electronic devices (TV, sound system, PC, etc.).
Connect wiring from your heating or cooling equipment to the relay box as shown at left. See wiring diagrams on page 23 for details.
Activate batteries and test thermostat
Remove thermostat cover and battery compartment cover, then discard the plastic tab inside to activate the batteries. The first time you do this, you will be prompted to set the date, time and preferred screen language. After this, you should check to make sure the thermostat can communicate with the relay box.
NOTE: This symbol will flash on the screen when battery power is low. Remove cover as shown at left and replace batteries with two fresh AA alkaline batteries.
Choose location and install thermostat
Install the thermostat on a wall or table about 1.2 to 1.5 metres above the floor. To check a location, set the thermostat to Test mode (see page 24), then check to verify that the green light on the relay box is still flashing. If it does not flash, find another location closer to the relay box
System test
After installation, you should check to make sure the system is working properly.
Installer settings allow you to customise how your system works. Check the tables on pages 28-31 to see if any settings need to be changed.

Thermostat screen is blank | • Make sure two fresh AA alkaline batteries are properly installed (see page 24). |
Heating or cooling system does not respond | • Check thermostat batteries (see above). • Make sure heating and cooling systems have power. Check fuses and circuit breakers and replace or reset as needed. • Check wiring (pages 22-23) and system configuration (pages 30-31). • If red light on relay box is on, the thermostat and relay box may not be able to communicate. See “Rebinding Procedure” on page 33. • If above remedies cannot resolve the problem, the thermostat may have to be moved. Try a location closer to the relay box, or farther away from interference by metal objects or electronic devices such as televisions, sound systems, PCs, etc. |
Desired temperature cannot be maintained | • If above remedies cannot resolve the problem, the thermostat may have to be moved. Make sure it is not installed near sources of hot or cold air (radiators, windows, heating or cooling ducts). |
In case of difficulty (re-binding procedure)
If you must replace a wireless thermostat or relay box, the system may not work properly afterward. Follow the steps below to re-establish wireless communication.
