- Provides the ultimate in comfort and convenience. It comes already programmed, so it’s your choice—use the preprogrammed schedule or set your own.
We invite you to spend a few minutes reading this manual. You’ll find it answers many of the questions that will arise as you become familiar and comfortable with your Honeywell thermostat, the state-of-the-art in-home comfort controls.
RECYCLING THERMOSTAT
If this thermostat is replacing a control that contains mercury in a sealed tube, do not place your old control in the trash. Contact your local waste management authority for instructions regarding recycling and the proper disposal of this control, or an old control containing mercury in a sealed tube. If you have questions, call Honeywell Inc. at 1-800-468-1502.
STEP 1. PREPARE FOR INSTALLATION
Check the compatibility chart to make sure this thermostat is compatible with your system. If not, return it to the retailer. For specialty thermostat information, call Honeywell Customer Assistance, toll-free at 1-800-468-1502.

STEP 2. REMOVE OLD THERMOSTAT
- Test to make certain that your heating and cooling systems are working properly. If either does not work, contact your local heating/air conditioning dealer. To avoid compressor damage, do not operate the cooling system when the outdoor temperature is below 50°F (10°C).
- Turn off power to the system at the furnace, or at the fuse/circuit breaker panel.
- Carefully unpack your new thermostat and wallplate; save the package of screws, instructions, and receipt.
- Remove the cover from the old thermostat. If it does not snap off when pulled firmly from the bottom, check for a screw used to lock on the cover.

Replacing a clock thermostat that has C or C1 clock terminals?
If you are replacing a Honeywell Chronotherm® Clock Thermostat, you may find one or two wires that go to the C or C1 clock terminals on the Chronotherm® wiring wallplate. Do not allow them to touch, or you can damage your transformer. Disconnect the wires and wrap them separately using electrical tape; do not wrap them together. Place the wires where they will not interfere with the operation of the new thermostat. Record the colors and terminal designation labels of the remaining wires.
Six or more wires?
If there are six or more wires (excluding the clock wires attached to terminals), you most likely have a variation of a multistage heat pump or another multistage system. The thermostat is not compatible with such systems so return the product to the place of purchase. If you would like information about which programmable thermostats will work with your system, call Honeywell Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-468-1502.
Three thermostat wires?
If you have three wires for a heating-only system and can operate the fan using the fan ON switch, this thermostat will work with your system. However, some hot water (zoned) heating systems have three thermostat wires. The thermostat will work only if you install an isolating relay on these systems. For details,
call Honeywell Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-468-1502.
STEP 3. MOUNT THERMOSTAT WALLPLATE
- Position the wallplate on the wall. Level the wallplate for appearance if desired. Use a pencil to mark the two mounting holes that best fit the application.
- Remove the wallplate from the wall, and drill 3/16 inch holes in the wall (if drywall) as marked. For firmer material such as plaster or wood, drill 7/32 inch holes. Gently tap anchors (provided) into drilled holes until flush with the wall.
- Reposition the wallplate over holes, pulling wires through the wiring opening. Loosely insert two mounting screws into holes.
- Level for appearance only; thermostat functions properly even when not level. Tighten mounting screws.
STEP 4. WIRE WALLPLATE TERMINALS
NOTE: All wiring must comply with local codes and ordinances. If unsure about household wiring procedures, call your local heating/air conditioning contractor. Refer to the labels you placed on the wires when you removed your old thermostat.
- Match the letter of your old thermostat wire with the terminal of the corresponding letter on your new thermostat. Refer to illustrations on pages 10, 11, and 12. Be sure to remove the factory-installed jumper connecting terminals R and Rc when wires are connected to both the R and Rc terminals.
- Loosen the terminal screws and slip each wire beneath its matching terminal. Either straight or wraparound wiring connections are acceptable (see illustration). Tighten terminals.
- Plug the hole in the wall with insulation to help prevent drafts from adversely affecting thermostat operation.
STEP 5. INSTALL THE BATTERIES
IMPORTANT
Three AA alkaline batteries are included with the thermostat. Batteries must be installed for the programming and operation of the thermostat and heating/cooling
system.
- Install the batteries on the wallplate as shown, making sure positive (+) terminals all face upward.
- As the batteries are running low, a REPL BAT indicator will flash for 1 to 2 months before the batteries run out completely. Replace the batteries as soon as possible after the indicator starts flashing.
If you insert new batteries within 20 to 30 seconds of removing the old ones, you will not have to reset the current time. However, if the display is blank, the batteries are dead or incorrectly installed. See page 22 to reset the current time and day.
IMPORTANT
Although the thermostat has a low battery indicator, replace the batteries once a year to prevent leakage and to prevent the thermostat and heating/cooling
system from shutting down due to lack of battery power. As a precaution when leaving home for longer than a month, change batteries before you leave to prevent the system from shutting down due to a lack of battery power. Use fresh alkaline batteries; non-alkaline batteries do not last as long and may leak,
causing damage to the thermostat or the wall surface. We recommend Energizer® batteries.
STEP 6. SET FAN OPERATION SWITCH
The thermostat fan operation switch, labeled FUEL SWITCH is factory set in the F position. This is the correct setting for most systems. If your system is an electric heat system, set the switch to E. The E setting allows the fan to turn on immediately with the heating or cooling in a system where the G terminal is
connected.
STEP 7. MOUNT THE THERMOSTAT
- ENGAGE TABS AT THE TOP OF THE THERMOSTAT AND WALLPLATE
- ENGAGE TABS AT THE TOP OF THE THERMOSTAT AND WALLPLATE
STEP 8. CUSTOMIZING YOUR THERMOSTAT
The thermostat can be customized to match your heating/cooling system and your display preferences. See pages 18 and 19 for available options. The thermostat comes factory set to the most common settings:
- °F temperature display,
- 12-hour clock format,
- Heating system on-time set for gas or oil forced air system,
- Smart Response
You can change any of these settings by pressing and holding the Information key and both keys until the numbers 4 and 6 are displayed. All the display segments will appear for about 3 seconds before the numbers 4 and 6 appear.
Smart Response
The CT3600 Thermostat is a small but powerful computer. The Smart Response feature calculates the time to turn on your heating or cooling system. It considers:
- air temperature
- wall temperature
- the time you want the comfort temperature established.
The thermostat displays In Recovery, changes the setpoint, and turns on the system whenever the thermostat activates the Smart Response feature.
- This thermostat learns from experience. Each day it checks how closely it hit the recovery target and adjusts the next day’s recovery start time accordingly.
- It takes a few days after installation for the thermostat to adjust to the local weather, your lifestyle, the construction of your home, and your heating/cooling system.
- You can turn off the Smart Response feature in the installer setup section by selecting Conventional Recovery.
